3 Tips For Studying Science Courses

Esthetics By P Brown Institute

If you are attending or planning to attend our esthetics school, you should know you’ll be learning about the sciences along with all the other topics taught in your program.  Just so you know, when you have to learn the principles associated with the sciences, you may have to spend more time studying than usual.  When studying the sciences you don’t want to leave the study to last or too late at night.  Below are some techniques to help you with learning the sciences.

3 Study Techniques For Learning The Sciences

1. If There Is Assigned Reading – Read It Before Attending Class

You’ll want to start by reading the summary first, often the summary is written in a more simple terms without all the technical concepts and gives clues to what’s important in the chapter.  This will help with your understanding and you can ask your teacher to clarify what you didn’t understand in the reading.

2. Read For Understanding

Oftentimes science chapters follow an outline format so pay attention to how the material is presented.  You may have to review the chapters more than once.

3. Analyze Each Bit Of Information

Whether it’s information in the book or media or other information provided by the teacher, pay close attention to the details, formulas, charts, etc.  You may have to visit the information more than once.  Sometimes repetition is required for us to fully grasp information.

There are 3 areas to pay attention to when you’re learning a science (biology, chemistry). The three areas are terminology, concepts, and visual aids.

Terminology

This is the terms and it’s helpful to learn the terms before going to class so you know what the teacher is talking about.  For example a biological term is “genes.”

Concepts

Concepts are more complex. It’s more of an abstract idea or general notion.  For example, while mitosis is a term, it includes a “detailed process that involves DNA splitting and chromosomes.”

Visual Aids

What compliments the learning process is the visual aids which may include anything from graphs and diagrams along with media and various other options your teacher suggests.  Oftentimes, the visual aids are helpful when you are seeking to understand the various concepts.

Ways To Help You Learn During Class

  • Direct your attention to absorbing the information taught in class.
  • When the material is unclear, ask questions to clarify.
  • Take clear and organized notes.

Ways To Help After class

  • Find an environment that’s free of interruptions and distractions so you can dive into the information.
  • Be sure to re-read your notes that day.  If you wait days after and review your notes, you may easily forget the important points.
  • Studies have found that our brains only truly focus an hour at a time.  So for best results, be sure to study in one-hour blocks.
  • Another great way to learn is repetition. When you’re trying to memorize information, you want to revisit it several times that day in order for you to retain it. If you fail to revisit the information within that first 24 hours, you may find that you only remember 10% of it.

I hope this was helpful.  Be sure to refer back to it when you enter the science portion of your learning at Esthetics by P Brown Institute.
